What the 24 minutes actually buys you
Clitheroe to Blackburn is 24 minutes on a direct train. That short hop is the whole price of living somewhere quite different from where you work.
Clitheroe is a historic market town at the centre of the Ribble Valley. There is a twelfth century Norman castle and its grounds in the middle of the town, independent shops and food pubs along the main street, and open country a short walk out. In 2024 The Sunday Times named the Ribble Valley in its Best Places to Live guide, for the countryside, the schools and the food and drink rather than anything to do with commuting.

How early and how late do the trains run?
The first train from Clitheroe leaves at 06:21 and the last arrives back at 23:42, roughly hourly in between. If your shift starts before six or finishes after midnight, check the timetable before you commit, because the bus is the fallback and it takes 37 minutes.
Can I really manage without a car?
For Blackburn, yes. Direct train in 24 minutes, bus every 15 minutes, and Clitheroe town centre is a few minutes’ walk from the house for everything else. That is not true of the Preston or Burnley commutes, which realistically need a car.
What does the train cost?
Advance singles start at around £5.20. A season ticket will work out cheaper if you are doing it five days a week, and it is worth pricing that against the roughly £150 a month the council tax alone would cost you in a Blackburn flat.
Am I tied in?
No. Under the Renters’ Rights Act 2025 there is no fixed term. The tenancy runs monthly and you give two months’ notice whenever you want to leave.
